Ron English quoted in Boston Globe: The portrait, prints that English created and began selling earlier this year, has drawn interest on political and street art blogs.
English said he was born and raised in Illinois and is an Obama supporter. He said he wanted the image to serve as a springboard for conversation about Obama's candidacy. "I believe Obama will take up Lincoln's challenge of uniting the country," English wrote. "This is the most excited I've ever been about a presidential candidate and I'm looking for ways that I can contribute as an artist and a citizen." Ron English's LEGAL Boston billboard ...

The famed Ron English’s “Abraham Obama” has become a 100 ft pop art Boston billboard, which the artist (legally) installed yesterday for a.politic, a politically themed art show at Gallery xiv, S. Boston.

Mysteriously, posters of this image have been affixed to several locations – causing quite a stir in the community.

Perhaps an Independence Day prank from Ron English (or Barack Obama's) fans?

Reported locations include electrical boxes, businesses and a private residence.

Gallery XIV, 37 Thayer St (@450 Harrison) in the south end of Boston is hosting a.politic with NYC art events company Reflect-arts, Inc. The show will officially open tomorrow July 4th from 2-6 PM.

Ron English himself was on hand yesterday, July 2, to grace the green scaffolding opposite the gallery with a massive 100 by 12 foot pop art installation of his Abraham Obama, (a hybrid portrait of the legendary leader Lincoln, melded together with the legend-in-his own time Senator.)

Many of his devotees somehow heard about (and came from miles around) to watch him install the piece. Some guests walked away with limited-edition posters.

The acclaimed, award-winning documentary on English, POPaganda: The Art and Crimes of Ron English will air on PBS on Saturday, July 5th.

Gallery XIV also plans to screen the film on Fri July 25th at 8:30 pm with a Q+A with Popaganda’s director, Pedro Carvajal.

Unlike the US, where placing your own messages on a corporate-owned billboard is illegal, English is regularly invited to install his politically-charged billboards in cities all over the world.

Inflatable NYC Street Sculpture ....

NYC Street artist Joshua Allen Harris created this inflatable 'polar bear' by tying plastic shopping bags to subway grates.

Definitely looks more like a pooch than a polar bear to me, but ingenious (and so lovable) nonetheless .... enjoy!
